If you are thinking of replacing your old bathroom tiles and give it a completely new look, the task is not only tough, but also time consuming. The easiest way to get this done is by hiring professionals. But if you choose to do it yourself, you need to have the required care, patience and dedication. Let us try and understand the basics for replacing bathroom tiles.
If you decide to replace the entire set in the bathroom, the first thing that you need to do is scrap off the existing one with a floor scraper. It is easier to do so by hitting the tiles with a hammer in the center. Once the old ones have been removed, properly scrape out the adhesive that was used to fix these with an angled steel head tool. You can try softening the adhesive and then using a knife for removing it off. Then clean the entire place so that the debris is cleared off. It is important to wear goggles and gloves while removing the old tiles and cleaning the place as it is necessary to protect the hands and even bits can fly off and hurt your eyes. Please take note of sharp edges while scrapping off the old bathroom tiles.
From this point, you will be working on fixing the new set of bathroom tiles. Remove the toilet pot by unscrewing the setup. Make sure you have the entire floor cleaned. You can do it by using a disposabl scraper and paper towels. More often than not, all the tiles will be of the same size. Measure the area of the bathroom and then calculate the number of tiles required to re-do the area with the new tiles. You will obviously need to cut some of the tiles to make them fit near the sides and corners as the area will not be as per the dimensions of the tiles. While you are cutting the tiles, be careful not to damage them. Get a good tile-cutter for this job.
Once your tiles are ready, mix your thinset and allow it to settle. Do not let it dry. Now carefully place on the grooves that you have made, and wipe off the excess thinset. You must not walk on the bathroom that you have just installed for at least a day. This will allow the tiles to dry completely and make it ready for use.
Once the bathroom have dried up, it is time to paint them. Barring the area that you will paint, cover the remaining area with drop sheets. Apply a thin coat of tile primer on the tiles. Make sure that you do not apply too much of it. Once the primer has dried up, use a sand paper to even out the surface. Remove the dust particles. You can repeat the application of primer and leveling the area with sand paper another time. Now, with a brush, apply gloss paint. Paint the bathroom tiles evenly so that they look clean and complete.
Revamping the bathroom by replacing the old existing bathroom tiles with new ones, and then painting them can be a tedious job. But if done meticulously and carefully, the entire process can be smooth and effective resulting in a wonderful looking bathroom. This not only saves you the money that would be required to hire professionals, but also gives you a satisfaction of doing your home by yourself.
